Tertiary butylhydroquinone influence over oxidation stability of biodiesel from waste cooking oil

ABSTRACTAn oxidation stability is very important for a long-term storage of biodiesel. Some physical (density and viscosity) chemical properties (acid value, iodine peroxide value) were analyzed to predict the biodiesel produced from Waste Cooking Oil (WCO). WCO one potential feedstocks in Indonesia, which large cooking oil consumer. Biodiesel was by transesterification process 60 oC temperature hour reaction time. Methanol added 4:1 (v/v) ratio with 2% potassium hydroxide as catalyst. This study observed influence tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), synthetic antioxidant, on TBHQ used an antioxidant agent prevent such storage. It blended at various concentrations (0-1200 ppm). Samples taken every week measure density, viscosity, acid value (IV) (PV) during blends conducted 4 weeks. The experimental results revealed that improvement achieved all concentrations. All parameters meet Indonesia’s National Standards (SNI) up 1200 ppm. treated ppm provided best result, due its IV, PV.
